Summer hockey brings the return of young players from overseas and university players in their off season, which means the play leveled up considerably on this warm Saturday evening in Tokyo.

Inspired by the impending Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals, the boys came out to play. The goaltenders, not so much. 5-hole goals were the name of the day with both keepers failing to keep the wickets closed on a number of occasions.

Rocco La Cara, fresh off of a 19 goal, 48 point season with the Selkirk Steelers of the MJHL, opened the scoring for the REDBLACKS, with his first of three on the night.

It was back and forth for the first period with Shu Hayakawa, Patrick Adams, Kai Kojima, Ronny Chuang, and Hiroki Yamashita tallying for the TCHC White squad. Young Gritty Jr got his first of two, and the aforementioned La Cara scored his 2nd and 3rd goals in the first frame for the REDBLACKS, which ended 5-4 White.

The REDBLACKS tried to keep pace in the second stanza with tallies by Koby, La Cara Sr., and John Bogdan, getting his first of two on the night. Bogdan returned to the ice after being on LTIR with a serious MCL sprain which kept him out of action for several months.

However, TCHC White kept the engine going with Hayakawa notching his second of the night (to go along with an assist), Yamashita with his 2nd and 3rd goals for his second hat trick in as many games, and Yokohama Grits GM, Takashi (Miko) Mikoshiba getting on the board. The period ended 9-7 for White.

In the 3rd, Mickaël Hebért Bureau scored on a beauty dangle for White, but, not to be outdone, the REDBLACK’s Bogdan turn-styled an old pylon D-man for a stunner of his own. Young Gritty Jr got his second of the night for the REDBLACKS, but that was not enough as Kojima, Hebért Bureau and Yamashita, with his fourth, finished the scoring for team White. Final score: 13-9 for TCHC White.
